FAQ #1: What to expect at MSChess Events

Memphis Scholastic Chess sponsors 9 Grand Prix and 2 major events for children who are USCF members and in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. These are officially sanctioned US Chess Federation events, meaning your USCF rating will go up or down depending on whether you win, lose, or draw in these events. USCF rules will be enforced for MSChess tournament play. Maximum number of events: Each child can play in a maximum of 7 events total out of the 11 events. Either 5 Grand Prix events plus the (2) major events, i.e. the Grade Championship on November 7th at University of Memphis Herff Engineering College and the January 16th 2010 John Hurt / MLK City Championship at Riverdale Elementary may be entered, or a total of 7 Grand Prix events. Who will you play? Typically the players will be divided into 5 groups in each of the Grand Prix events. New players will typically start out playing other unrated or beginning players in the E Group. The A Group will have the highest rated players. Over time, and with success in your tournament play, you can advance into higher rated group play as your rating increases.
